Cultural Heritage Area

Come Hear from Andrew Downs on January 9 in New Castle

Learn About Plans for a Cultural Heritage Area

Preserve Craig will hold a meeting in New Castle on January 9, 2020 to hear from the public about future projects, elect officers, and learn about plans for a cultural heritage project that could designate a portion of our region as a special historic place.

Andrew Downs, a Senior Regional Director of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, will be our guest to talk about the trail and to discuss ways to honor the cultural heritage of the area.    He is leading an initiative to document and preserve the cultural heritage of Peters Mountain while promoting sustainable growth.  This initiative would encompass our area and would build upon the work that Preserve Craig initiated on Cultural Attachment in the 1990s.

Mr. Downs is meeting this week with citizens in Montgomery County.  The public is also invited to attend the Preserve Montgomery County meeting this Thursday, December 12 at 7 PM at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church to discuss this initiative.   Similar meetings have recently been held  in Giles County and Monroe County, West Virginia.    We’ll get to hear the results of those meetings as well, so put the evening of January 9 on your calendar.

Preserve Craig’s mission, to protect our natural, historical, and cultural resources, aligns perfectly with that of the Appalachia Trail Conservancy. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s mission is to preserve and manage the Appalachian Trail – ensuring that its vast natural beauty and priceless cultural heritage can be shared and enjoyed today, tomorrow, and for centuries to come.

At the January meeting you can learn more about our mapping project and our survey of what other initiatives are important in Craig County.  Preserve Craig will be providing pizza and will announce the New Castle location soon.
